What is a Secret Santa generator?
Secret Santa is a gift exchange where everyone gives one present to one other person, chosen at random, and nobody knows who their giver is until the presents are opened. A Secret Santa generator does the drawing of names for you, so nobody needs a hat, everyone can take part, including the organizer, and nobody ends up with their own name.
This generator works without sign-up and without collecting email addresses. You get one private link per person and send it yourself, in whatever app your group already uses.
How to organize a Secret Santa
- Enter the names. Type or paste everyone who takes part, one name per line. Use unique names; for two people called Anna, write “Anna K” and “Anna M”.
- Add rules if you need them. Under Exclusions, budget and date, list pairs who shouldn't draw each other, such as couples or people who live together, and add the budget, the exchange date and a note for everyone.
- Press Draw names. Everyone gets exactly one person to buy for, nobody draws themselves, and excluded pairs never meet.
- Send the links. Next to each name, press WhatsApp or Email to open your own app with the message and link ready, then pick the person and send. Copy link works with any other app, and on a phone Share opens your apps directly. Each link reveals only that person's match, together with the budget, date and note.
- Together in one room? Press QR code and let each person scan their own code with their phone camera, then press Next for the next person.
- Or print slips. For an office or family gathering, Print slips prints one folded slip per person.
Fullscreen: press Fullscreen at the top of the tool to show it large, for example when drawing names together at a party. With 🎨 Colors & effects you can set your own colors and choose whether the reveal is shown big with fireworks.
Is the draw fair and private?
The draw uses your browser's cryptographically secure random number generator and tries random arrangements until it finds one that follows every rule, so every valid outcome is possible and nobody can steer it. If your exclusions make a draw impossible, for example in a group of three where two people exclude each other, you'll be told so instead of getting a broken result.
Names never leave your device except inside the links you send. The organizer's page keeps the last draw in this browser, so you can copy a link again if someone loses theirs. Avoid pressing Show all pairs if you're taking part and want to be surprised too.
When to use it
- Family Christmas: one good present each instead of a pile of small ones, with partners kept apart.
- Office and team parties: a fair draw with a set budget, even for remote colleagues who only meet online.
- Friends and classes: send links in the group chat in a minute, without collecting emails.
- Other gift swaps: Kris Kringle, Secret Friend, Wichteln or a birthday swap work exactly the same way.
Tips for a great Secret Santa
- Agree on a budget. A clear limit, such as €20, keeps it fair and stress-free.
- Share a wish hint. Use the note for something like “Add one hint about yourself to the group chat”.
- Set the date early. Send the links a few weeks before the exchange so everyone has time to shop.
- Want to pick a gift idea at random? Put a few ideas on the spin wheel, or split a big group with the team generator.
